High levels of a poisonous dioxin could have found its way into food products such as desserts, soup powders and baby formula in the UK. The European Commission contacted the FSA about the contamination of a thickening agent called guar gum (E412), that is commonly used in food production. The FSA confirmed that two batches of the gum manufactured by India Glycerols had been imported into the UK and more may be in circulation. "There is no immediate health risk to consumers but, as these chemicals have the potential for a range of toxic effects, people shouldn't be exposed to them unnecessarily," advised the FSA.
