Give us our daily white bread

Dr Toni Steer and Dr Susan Jebb MRC Human Nutrition Research Sir; We disagree with your comment (Letters, The Grocer, 5 May) that white bread is devoid of fibre. The National Diet and Nutrition Surveys show UK bread consumption dominated by white varieties - 65% in adults and 79% in young people. White gives approximately 10% of the intake of energy and fibre among adults and young people. Relative to its energy content, it makes a disproportionately important contribution to some other nutrients, including calcium, iron and, unfortunately, sodium. While wholemeal varieties have nutritional advantages, white bread plays an important role in UK diet.
