Haldanes has swooped to buy Scarborough-based Woodhead Bakery in a move that will bring production of its freshly baked items in-house.

The retail chain also adds 11 stores to its footprint after taking over Woodhead, a family-run business that had slipped into administration. As part of the deal, Woodhead managing director Phil Davis takes the helm of Haldanes’ Bakery Products subsidiary.

“The Woodhead bakery and shop portfolio represents an excellent fit within the existing Haldane portfolio,” said a spokesman for Haldnes.

“It offers total vertical integration which will see the bakery supply, in due course, all Haldane Retail Group stores, commencing with the initial 20 Ugo stores.”

Davis added: “It is great news for Scarborough that the factory has been saved from closure. I look forward to working with the new owners to rebuild confidence in the Woodhead name and products and I am sure our existing customers will continue to support us in the 11 acquired stores.”

Another 18 stores formerly under the Woodhead banner have been sold to local rival Coopland & Sons.
