Brakes has achieved zero waste to landfill since July this year.
The foodservice giant has been working with recycling group ACM Environmental to implement initiatives that reduce its environmental impact.
Brakes produces about 14,200 tonnes of waste each year across more than 60 sites.
“We have been working in partnership with ACM for a number of years and together have managed to reach our optimum environmental performance,” said Brakes indirect goods and services manager Steve Webster.
“ACM have a unique business model supported by a nationally integrated network of recycling and reprocessing facilities. This enables Brakes to minimise the amount of waste we produce, optimise our recycling levels, eliminate the use of landfill, and reduce our impact on the environment with significantly reduced costs.”
In recognition of the achievement, Brakes received the Greener Path Award for Landfill Diversion.
“We are delighted to present Brakes with this award as they have been committed to reducing their environmental impact,” said ACM operations and finance director Travis Way.
“With multiple and varying sites across the UK, this was going to be a substantial undertaking so we are pleased to have achieved such consistent and impressive results with them.”
