Britain’s largest baker has told customers it plans to raise the wholesale price of all its bread and bakery snack products by 10% from mid-January following the latest hike in the price of flour.
British Bakeries, which makes Hovis and Mothers Pride bread, said a £30 per tonne increase in the price of flour across all grades had prompted the move.
British Bakeries sales director Steven Field said: “We warned last month that another increase
could become unavoidable as a result of soaring wheat prices. We are doing our utmost to contain the cost increase but it is too large to avoid passing it on.”
Miller Rank Hovis, which supplies British Bakeries with flour, said milling wheat prices had gone up 20% since the summer. Sales and marketing director Jon Tanner said: “The unrelenting upsurge in raw material prices shows no sign of abating.”
