Sir, British American Tobacco sees its new "demi-slim" cigarettes as standard bearers for personal choice but they're nothing more than an ugly marketing ploy ('BAT claims Vogue launch is not a fashion statement', The Grocer, 4 June, p6).

We need to knock rule sniffers like this off the catwalk once and for all and so must hope the government is more than demi-determined to speed up proposals to introduce plain cigarette packaging.

It would help reduce the attractiveness of tobacco, increase the effectiveness of health warnings, and stop misleading claims about the harms of smoking.
