I was surprised that there was no mention of a very widely eaten insect: the cochineal beetle used to colour so many things red “naturally”. Said beetle is so easily disguised though as carmine, carminic acid or E120. Check your strawberry yoghurts and pink marshmallows! Then there are the delights of nematodes and insect byproducts like shellac and honey.

Maybe we are not as far away from insectopia as we thought?
