The food sustainability debate is hitting the Christmas dinner table this year, thanks to Greenpeace.

The environmental organisation has unveiled an intriguing ad in which a potato and a turkey take to a comedy club stage to engage in a roast battle, cracking jokes at each other’s expense. There are some good lines, notably the suggestion that spuds’ dull, pasty-white ubiquity makes them “the Piers Morgan of Christmas lunch”.

Things take a turn, however, when the potato prods at turkey’s ecological impact, telling him “your dirty little feed habit is destroying the planet”. The atmosphere cools and off he strops – surely foreshadowing a few Christmas dinner table arguments started by people who have seen this ad.

You might have expected Greenpeace’s ad to be the festive season’s most thought-provoking – but who’d have thought it would also be the funniest?
