Anthony Rowcliffe & Son has won a contract to supply M&S with a range of 11 artisan British cheeses.

It will be the first time Rowcliffe, which distributes speciality British and Continental cheeses, has supplied the retailer. The cheeses include Colston Bassett Stilton, Appleby's Cheshire and Lincolnshire Poacher and have gone into 200 stores. All but the Appleby's Cheshire are new additions for M&S.

The deal marks a turnaround in fortunes for Rowcliffe, which lost out when Waitrose reduced its supply requirements last month. "Working with Marks & Spencer gives us a great opportunity to bring top cheese to the high street in stores where quality is the key driver," said chairman Tim Rowcliffe.

Supplying a number of retailers would leave the company less exposed, he added. Last month he outlined plans to focus on the core independent retail side of the business.
