Former Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers has teamed up with food waste expert Tristram Stuart to launch a new campaign aimed at lifting the ban on feeding food waste to pigs.

Miers, who runs the Mexican restaurant chain Wahaca, is calling on consumers, industry and policymakers to get behind ‘The Pig Idea - Let Them Eat Waste’ (www.thepigidea.org), and end the ban, which was introduced in 2001.

“If you feed food waste to pigs they convert it to meat,” she told The Grocer. The ban was “crazy because they’re feeding pigs on a largely soy-based diet and that soy is often grown in the Amazon,” she added.
