As expected, Marc Bolland, chief operating officer of Heineken, has been appointed chief executive officer of Morrisons.

The supermarket group said that Bolland, who has worked at Heineken for 20 years, would take up his new role on 1 September, replacing Bob Stott.

Morrisons also confirmed that deputy chairman David Jones will retire at the end of the month.

Bolland said: “This is a great opportunity for me to head one of the UK's leading companies, and I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Sir Ken Morrison, chairman of Morrisons, said: “Marc has a wealth of experience operating in a highly competitive consumer products sector and also brings extensive commercial and leadership skills to the group which will ensure its continued progress.”

He added: “Bob has been a major contributor to the development of the group over the last ten years. I would like to express my personal gratitude to Bob for his support and wise counsel over the years.”
