Morrisons has proved victorious in the Christmas G33 survey, knocking Asda off last year’s top spot and proving to be the cheapest retailer for festive goods, including food and alcohol, wrapping paper, cards, crackers and gifts across the big five. Competition was fierce, however, as nearest rival Asda’s £113.32 trolley was just £1.26 more.

Morrisons provided 13 of the lowest-priced items on the list, including several chocolate, gift and alcohol items, such as Ferrero Rocher, Quality Street, Hardys Stamp Shiraz-Cabernet, Sauvignon and whole turkey. But its Mamma Mia DVD – £2.66 cheaper than at Asda – made the big difference.

Asda fell to second place despite providing 16 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items – the most of all the retailers. These included the After Eights, Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire puds, Ocean Spray cranberry juice and Paxo sage & onion stuffing, which were all on promotion, as well as two of the three gifts on the list – The Appeal, £1.13 cheaper than at Morrisons, and the Take That CD, 63p cheaper.

Tesco maintained its third-placed Christmas G33 status and its £117.76 trolley offered nine of the lowest or joint-lowest priced items, including cheapest paperback, Christmas pud and cheapest Three Barrels Brandy, which was on promotion and cost just 2p less than Morrisons’.

Sainsbury's lagged behind, with its £124.85 trolley costing £12.79 more than at Morrisons. The fourth-placed retailer offered eight of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items, including non-food festive products, Christmas crackers and wrapping paper. It also provided six of the most expensive or joint-expensive items, such as brussels sprouts, Ocean Spray cranberry juice and satsumas.

Waitrose’s festive trolley totalled £28.94 more than Morrisons’. Mamma Mia cost £5.23 more than the cheapest retailer, and the whole turkey per kg totalled £5.45 more. Waitrose was also priciest for Christmas pud, cards and crackers.
