Somerfield said second half sales were affected by the loss of margin on mobile phone card sales as consumers opted for electronic top ups.

For the 28 weeks to November 8, the supermarket said sales at the group improved on the back of its store refit programme. Like-for-like sales rose 0.9%, with second half sales up 1.4% compared to a first half rise of 0.5%.

Interim like-for-like sales at the Somerfield chain rose 2.2% against 0.4% last year. But the group said sales were hit by a 0.6% loss in phone card sales.

But its Kwik Save fascia saw like-for-likes dip 0.1% down from a rise of 1.3% in 2002.

Executive chairman John von Spreckelsen noted that the refit programme had only been rolled out to 32 of Kwik Save’s 649-store estate.
