Shoppers can donate at collection points in Aldi stores

Aldi has launched its annual festive food bank appeal and is encouraging customers to donate the most needed items, such as tinned food, toiletries and baby essentials.

The discounter is working with redistribution platform Neighbourly to get food to those in need this Christmas.

Aldi said research from Neighbourly showed four in five charities had seen demand for services grow over the past six months, with nine in 10 attributing this to rising living costs. Demand for food banks is expected to increase by nearly 30% over the colder months.

Two-thirds of local charities said essentials such as food, toiletries and hygiene products were their top priority, and 57% called for more toys and gifts to give families a better Christmas.

Shoppers can donate at collection points in Aldi stores nationwide.

“Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for food banks and local charities supporting those in need,” said Aldi UK national sustainability director Luke Emery. “In the past, our customers have been incredibly generous and keen to give back to their communities.

“By sharing the list of most-needed items, we hope to make it even easier for people to donate this festive season.”

Neighbourly CEO Steve Butterworth said: “Many food banks and community groups are under huge pressure this winter, with more people than ever turning to them for support.

“Aldi’s continued commitment to helping local causes – and making it simple for customers to donate what’s needed most – will make a real impact in communities across the UK this Christmas as many struggle through the cost of living crisis.”
