Asda has doubled the amount of British apples sold this year, British Apples & Pears has revealed.
In the grower body’s annual award for retailer performance in the sales of British apples and pears, Asda was awarded most improved for having the best year-on-year performance.
Asda doubled its volume of British apples sales from 2023/24 to 2024/25 from 5,555 tonnes to 11,427 tonnes.
It was described as a “real testament” by BAP executive chair Ali Capper.
For the second year in a row, Tesco sold the most British product, shifting 34,043 tonnes of British dessert apples, ahead of Aldi, which sold 30,130 tonnes.
“Tesco has continued to demonstrate their commitment to British apples, and we’re thrilled to see them take the top spot again,” said Capper.
Several supermarkets also over-indexed for British apples – selling more than you would expect given their grocery market share.
Aldi sold 20.2% of all British apples compared with its market share of 10.8% and Lidl sold 14.4% compared with 8.3%.
Sainsbury’s, M&S and Waitrose all also outperformed their GMS.

However, some supermarkets are still underperforming, including Tesco, Morrisons and Asda, despite improvements made.
Sainsbury’s sold the most British pears in the season, selling 5,289 tonnes. It was also the most improved as it increased sales by 905 tonnes compared with the 2023/24 season.
“With a strong British crop in 2024, we’d hoped to see everyone build on their sales,” said Capper. “While some have found it more challenging, we see this as a real opportunity. By sharing this data, we want to inspire all retailers to champion British apples and pears even more in the year ahead.”
