Biona has introduced a new trio of functional beverages to tap growing demand for hydration, fibre and gut health.
The lineup comprises Immune and Fibre shots (rsp: £2.99/95ml) and an organic coconut water (rsp: £4.69/one-litre).
Immune is made from a blend of organic fruit and vegetable juices with added functional botanical extracts including shiitake mushrooms, mustard seeds and lichen extracts.
Fibre contains plum and cinnamon, alongside 6g of dual prebiotic fibre blend from inulin and acacia fibre “to nourish gut biodiversity”.
Meanwhile, Biona’s coconut water is made from 100% Sri Lankan coconuts and billed as “a clean source of natural hydration with essential electrolyte potassium”. It contains no added sugar or additives and is marketed as a “natural alternative to both sugary soft drinks and artificial sport drinks”.
“The UK functional beverage market is growing fast, as many people are now choosing drinks offering health benefits over the traditional sugary soft drinks which have historically dominated the category,” said Gemma Williams, head of marketing at Biona owner Windmill Organics. “We’re confident all three of these new additions to our range will prove popular as they play different roles, matching the needs for gut health, hydration and boosted immunity, with no need to rely on supplements.”
Nearly one in four new product launches across food and drink now contains a functional claim, Mintel’s Global New Products Database shows.
In the UK, some 10% of food and non-alcoholic drink launches in the 12 months to May featured such claims, up two percentage points year on year.
