Steven Kersley helped set up BrewDog’s spirits division in 2015

BrewDog has announced the departure of the managing director of its distilling arm.

Steven Kersley, who has been MD of BrewDog Distilling Co since December 2022 and part of BrewDog’s spirits division since its inception in 2015, had decided to leave the Scottish business “following mutual discussions”, BrewDog CEO James Taylor said in a statement.

Kersley had been “been the driving force behind BrewDog’s distilling journey, building the business from the ground up, leading an incredible team, and creating an award-winning portfolio of brands”, said Taylor. “The board and I are hugely grateful for everything Steven has contributed and we wish him every success for what he has planned next.”

Kersley added: “It’s been an incredible journey helping to build BrewDog Distilling Co into what it is today. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together, the brands, the team, and the creativity that’s fuelled it all.

“I’ll always be grateful for the experience and the people I’ve worked alongside, and I’m excited for what comes next, both for the distillery and for me personally.”

Following Kersley’s exit, Taylor said BrewDog Distilling Co would “continue to closely align with the wider BrewDog business”.

“This will allow us to build on the strong foundations Steven and the team have created, giving the distilling business access to BrewDog’s full commercial capabilities and supporting our ambitious growth plans in the years ahead,” he added.

Last month, BrewDog announced an internal restructure to “right-size” its business after a year of stagnant sales and persistent losses.

Taylor is under pressure to turn around the fortunes of the Scottish brewer, which has reported pre-tax losses in five successive years, totalling £148m.

The exact number of roles affected was not disclosed by the brewer, which declined to comment further when contacted by The Grocer.
