British Sugar is delivering the first organic beet sugar grown in the UK to its customers.
Market development manager Daniel Johnson said 39 of the UK's organic growers had been contracted to grow the crops, which are certified by the Soil Association.
The company has revamped its Newark plant in Nottinghamshire to allow product segregation and organic compliance during processing.
Johnson said: "Many of the organic ingredients used in the UK are imported from overseas, so reducing food miles wherever possible is important. What's more, as sugar beet plays an essential role in crop rotation, growing it organically will contribute to the development of other organic crops in the UK."
British Sugar estimates that the potential UK market could be 4,000 to 5,000 tonnes of organic sugar cane and beet, although only 1,800 tonnes are currently available.
British Sugar also imports organic cane products.
