The British Par 3 golf championship was disrupted by animal welfare protestors on Tuesday over its ties to Farmfoods.
Campaigners from animal rights group Humane League UK entered the event at Nailcote Hall, Warwickshire, demanding that Farmfoods reinstate its promise to stop sourcing eggs from caged hens, which the supermarket dropped in September last year.
Tense scenes saw members of the public, golfers and activists confront one another, with the latter claiming they were handled roughly.
Since the protest, British Par 3 clarified that its sponsorship with Farmfoods “ended earlier this year”.
The action is the latest in a series against the u-turn, which the supermarket said was down to an inability to “secure supply of sufficient volue of non-cage eggs”. The group also disrupted the Tartan Pro Tour in April, which caused the tournament to drop Farmfoods as a sponsor, and a petition launched against the mult’s u-turn in January.
“Thousands of hens are still locked in cages, in brutal confinement that withers their bodies and minds,” a Humane League UK protester said. “Yet remarkably, this supermarket still finds money to sponsor golf events up and down the UK.”
“The only ‘birdies’ Farmfoods should care about are the ones locked in cages,” they added. “We are glad that British Par 3 has publicly announced that their relationship with Farmfoods has ended.”
Farmfoods was approached for comment.
