Casino will generate 46% of its sales in France from discount and convenience stores by 2005, according to a new report from IGD.
The French retailer plans to open 120 new discount stores and 1,350 c-stores in its home market over the next two years, to account for 62% of its sales area in France.
Casino operates 4,390 c-stores in France. Petit Casino is the largest c-store network, while Petit Casino 24 is a new concept based on automatic vending machines. Casino controls the Spar franchise in France and plans to open 150 new stores by 2005. Its other convenience fascias include the Vival franchise and Eco Service discount convenience stores. In September 2003, Casino launched a new compact c-store format under the fascia ‘Daily Monop’ and unveiled plans to launch another fascia called Casitalia.
IGD said discounters perform well in France due to tight planning legislation for large new stores and price sensitivity since the launch of the Euro. Casino’s discount format Leader Price its market share by 0.2% to 3.2% in the last year, with prices which are 30-40% lower than supermarkets.
IGD added that Casino has a distribution agreement, called ‘Corners’ whereby it sells its private label range via traditional retailers such as bakers and butchers. It also supplies Shell and Total forecourts in this way.
