The Cornish pasty has overtaken the standard pre-packaged meal deal as the UK’s second-favourite lunch choice, new data shows.
According to a study of over 4,000 Brits, commissioned by The Cornish Company, almost a third (29%) prefer a pasty at lunch, which is more than double the popularity of the standard pre-packaged meal deal (12%). A homemade sandwich or wrap came in as top choice at 48%.
When comparing flavours, a traditional steak pasty was the favourite among 61% of voters, followed by cheese & onion at 11%.
However, the research found that younger demographics had a growing appetite for innovation, with 26% naming ‘Christmas dinner’ and 20% naming ‘full English breakfast’ as the top “dream fillings” they would like to see in a pasty.
“With National Pasty Day just days away, these results confirm what we’ve long suspected: the Cornish pasty has graduated from a treat to a genuine powerhouse of the British lunch hour,” said The Cornish Company MD and co-founder Tom Woodley.
“Our research shows that people are tired of the ‘same old’ soggy sandwich; they want lunch with real heritage and heart. Whether it’s through our traditional hand-crimped classics or our expanded gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan hampers, we are making the pasty accessible to everyone.
“It’s a proud moment to see this Cornish staple back in the top tier of British culture, and we’re thrilled to be leading that charge from our home in Cornwall.”
