Disaronno has issued a recall for bottles of its Originale liqueur over the possible presence of glass.
In a notice published on its website, The Food Standards Agency said it was possible that some “small pieces of glass” could be found within some bottles of Disaronno Originale on sale in the UK.
This would make the affected products “unsafe to drink” it added.
Affected lines feature batch codes 25374, 25375, 25381, 25382, 25435, 25442 and 25444 on the back of bottle.
Customers that had purchased a product with one of these codes should not consume it and instead return it to the point of purchase for a refund, the FSA said.
Point of sale notices would also be displayed in all retail stores that are selling the affected products, it added.
An “anomaly on a bottling line” had resulted in the possible presence of “micro-fragments of glass” in some units, Disaronno owner Ilva Saronno said.
“The potential presence of glass micro-fragments affected only 0.17% of…700ml bottles which have been withdrawn from the market,” a spokeswoman for Ilva Saronno said. “All other formats … sold in the UK, were not affected by the anomaly.”
None of the major grocery retailers stocked 700ml bottles of Disaronno and were therefore also unaffected, the spokeswoman said.
“We took immediate action to resolve the anomaly, to ensure consumer safety in coordination with the UK food safety authorities and instructed all the impacted customers to immediately remove the stock affected,” they continued. “We remain committed to ensuring product quality, transparency towards consumers and compliance with the UK food safety standards.”
It comes after similar recall was issued by Ilva Saronno in the Republic of Ireland on Monday.
