The bolt-on acquisition is designed to strengthen Emmi’s desserts portfolio and position it as a ‘category champion’

Swiss dairy giant Emmi has snapped up The English Cheesecake Company, marking a further push into the UK market.

The “bolt-on“ acquisition, the value of which was undisclosed, was designed to strengthen Emmi’s desserts portfolio and position it as a “category champion”, said the supplier – best known for its Onken and Caffè Latte brands.

London-based English Cheese Company will become part of Mademoiselle Desserts, which Emmi acquired in July 2024.

The deal marked a strategic step for Mademoiselle Desserts as it strengthened its cheesecake credentials and unlocked opportunities for innovation and growth, Emmi added.

“We are really excited to finally welcome English Cheesecake Company into the group and know that together we can build on the excellent foundations and create growth through innovation, excitement and customer engagement,” said Nigel Taylor, UK group managing director for Mademoiselle Desserts.

The English Cheesecake Company was founded in 2000 and generated sales of £23m in the past financial year.

Its premium-positioned products are based on traditional British recipes and “delight retail as well as foodservice customers with their artisanal quality and on-trend flavours”.

The portfolio includes classic cheesecakes, vegan and frozen delights and snack formats.

While the cheesecake offering of Mademoiselle Desserts having a foothold in foodservice, ECC’s retail business was “the ideal extension to the distribution strategy”, said Emmi.

“Theacquisition increases our presence in the fast-growing premium cheesecakes segment and contributes to the global indulgence megatrend,” said Didier Boudy, EVP Emmi Desserts.

“This represents a further step towards advancing our strong market position in the global premium desserts market and creating synergies within our portfolio.”
