Erdinger Weisbräu has announced its owner Werner Brombach has died aged 86 after a short illness.
In a statement, the German brewer said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our owner, Werner Brombach, who died on Saturday at the age of 86, surrounded by his family, following a short illness.
“Werner Brombach dedicated his life to the art of Bavarian brewing. As the second-generation owner of our brewery, founded in 1886, he transformed Edringer Weissbier into a brand known and loved around the world – while always remaining deeply connected to his hometown of Erding.
“Werner Brombach was far more than one of Germany’s most influential brewery owners. He was a visionary, a pioneer and a passionate ambassador for the Bavarian way of life.”
Bromach assumed ownership at Erdinger Weisbräu following the death of his father Franz Bromach in 1975. Under his stewardship, annual production was expanded from 40,000 hectolitres to over 1.5 million hectolitres.
The brewery also expanded internationally under his remit, and its beers are now sold in over 100 countries around the world, including in the UK.
Bromach formally stood down as managing director of Erdinger in 2023. Last year, he transferred his shares in the brewery to the Werner Brombach Family Foundation, a move Erdinger said would ensure the brewery’s future remained aligned with its owner’s values.
“We mourn the loss of an extraordinary entrepreneur, a true brewer driven by passion, and one of the greatest ambassadors of the Bavarian joy for life,” Erdinger Weisbräu added.
Bromach is survived by his daughter Claudia Bromach, and son-in-law Alexander Bromach.
