Finsbury Food Group has claimed a UK supermarket “first”, launching a bento cake into Tesco.
Little Big Cake has debuted with Paint the Town Red Velvet (rsp: £14/740g).
The NPD features one serves-eight red velvet cake, layered with raspberry jam, and topped with cream cheese frosting and funfetti sprinkles. It also contains four mini red velvet cupcakes, topped with cream cheese frosting and jam. It is exclusive to Tesco for 12 weeks.
Over recent years, so-called “bento cakes” have gained popularity on image-led social media sites like Pinterest and Instagram, thanks to their aesthetically friendly designs.
In Japan, “bento” refers to a single-portion, packed meal. “Bento cake”, therefore, refers to a miniature, lunchbox-sized cake.
While independent bakeries were increasingly offering bento cakes at a premium price point, Finsbury Food Group had spotted a gap in the market for a more affordable supermarket version, it said.
The Little Big Cake brand would allow it to respond more quickly to consumer trends and innovate with flavour profiles across the seasons, it added.
“This launch reinforces Finsbury’s ambition to lead in bakery innovation,” said Finsbury Food Group development innovation manager Ross Lowrey-Heywood.
“We want to be first to market, bring new ideas to shelves and excite shoppers with products that reflect changing tastes and lifestyles.”
