PepsiCo looks set to bring its Tostitos tortilla chip brand to the UK.
The snacking giant has applied to register the logo for Tostitos Scoops – a curved variant of the snack – as a trademark with the Intellectual Property Office under class 29 for crisps and class 30 for corn chips.
Tostitos made its US debut in 1981, launching tortilla chips nationwide in Traditional and Nacho Cheese variants.
The brand name is a contraction of the Spanish word “tostadito”, meaning “little toasted thing”.
In 2001, it launched Tostitos Scoops, a curved chip it claims can hold an extra heaped teaspoon of dip or salsa.
At the time, the NPD was billed as the most significant launch of its history.
Today, Tostitos’ lineup includes an array of tortilla chips in different shapes – such as “thin & crispy” and “bite-size rounds” – and flavours – like Chile Lime and Hint of Guacamole.
While PepsiCo’s latest trademark activity signals a potential UK launch Tostitos Scoops, it had not responded to The Grocer’s requests by the time of publication.
Even so, this isn’t the first time PepsiCo’s trademark activity has preceded a UK rollout of one of its popular US snack ranges.
For instance, PepsiCo brought its Doritos Dinamita range to the UK in February, having applied to register the brand logo as a trademark with the IPO in 2023.
