Tennent’s has become the latest brand to jump in on the fruit beer trend.
It has debuted Tennent’s Tops, a 3.4% abv lager with added lemon.
The new brew will land in Asda and Tesco on 6 April, before hitting Morrisons and Sainsbury’s later next month (rsp: £4.50/4x440ml).
Tennent’s Tops was made “using the same Scottish ingredients and classic recipe” as the brand’s flagship lager but offered a “zesty twist” through the addition of citrus flavour, said brand owner C&C Group.
The citrus addition had been “carefully balanced” with added carbonation helping to “maximise the refreshing flavours – resulting in a delicate, sessionable beer,” it added.
It comes after Tennent’s marked its 140th anniversary by launching a Bavarian Pilsner last October.
“We’re excited to follow the success of our Bavarian Pilsner with Tennent’s Tops – a refreshing citrus twist on our beloved Tennent’s Lager,” said Hazel Alexander, senior brand manager at Tennent’s.
Demand for flavoured beer was growing and the segment had added £3m in off-trade sales in the last year, Alexander said, citing Worldpanel by Numerator data.
“At 3.4% Tennent’s Tops will also appeal to those looking for a reduced alcohol beer and complements our range, which also includes Tennent’s Light and Tennent’s Zero,” she added.
Other beer brands to have debuted fruit flavoured beers since the turn of the year include Cruzcampo, Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0, Heineken 0.0 and 1664.
