Tesco has launched an own-label range of Made Without Added Nitrites ham and bacon products.
The retailer said the launch came in response to growing customer demand for nitrite-free options with online searches for products without added nitrites up 360% year on year.
The range, which is made from 100% British pork, includes eight lines including four bacon and four ham SKUs.
“We’re excited to launch our Tesco Made Without Added Nitrites range designed to give our customers greater choice without compromising on taste,” said Richard Wood, meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy director. “Our product development teams and supplier partners have worked hard to develop a great quality range made from 100% British pork that is perfect for mealtimes.”
The bacon lines (rsp: £2.50/ 250g) include Unsmoked Back, Unsmoked Streaky, Smoked Back and Smoked Streaky variants, which will launch from 21 September.
Meanwhile, nitrite-free ham options (rsp: £2.30/120g) include Cooked Ham, Cooked Ham Wafer Thin, Oak Smoked Ham, and Honey Roast Ham. These will launch from 12 October.
Tesco also expanded its nitrite-free range this week with the listing of Denhay Made Without Nitrites Smoked Back Bacon (rsp: £4/200g) and Denhay Made Without Nitrites Unsmoked Back Bacon (rsp:£4/200g) rolling out into stores this week.
It comes as there has been a flurry of activity in nitrite-free at the major retailers. Sainsbury’s launched its own nitrite-free own-label range of bacon earlier this year, including Smoked and Unsmoked Back Bacon lines.
Meanwhile, M&S has also launched a range of dry cured nitrite-free bacon lines under the brand A Good Rasher. It includes Smoked and Unsmoked lines in both Back and Streaky formats.
