The Tesco Superstore in Kennington has apologised for a refrigeration ‘meltdown’

Tesco has reassured shoppers that fridge and freezer breakdowns in a number of stores are not an estate-wide problem.

The supermarket has acknowledged isolated failures but said it remains confident in its infrastructure, with fresh and frozen food still available from the vast majority of stores.

It follows reports on social media and in the press of empty fridges and freezers in Tesco stores in Altrincham, Bristol, Crewe, Colchester, Haslingden, Hove, Stafford, West Bromwich and Winchester.

One Tesco store emailed shoppers today saying: “Our fridge had a meltdown” and apologising for “any disruption you may have experienced at our Kennington Superstore over the past few weeks due to a refrigeration system failure”.

“We’re pleased to let you know that the refrigeration systems are now fully repaired and all fresh and frozen lines have been restocked. Our team has worked hard to get the store back to normal as quickly as possible.”

The problems have spread to Tesco deliveries, with a driver from one store posting on TikTok: “All of our fridges and freezers at the store have broke. Everyone’s kicking off and aint happy about it. I don’t blame them, to be fair. I’d be fuming if half my shopping was missing. But at the end of the day… chillers and freezers can’t cope.”

A number of other supermarkets including M&S, Sainsbury’s and Asda were also hit by fridge and freezer breakdowns when temperatures soared to as high as 36°C in parts of the UK last week.
