Tesco has appointed Matthew Rhind as its new UK distribution director.
He will replace Andrew Woolfenden, who is to retire at the end of the summer after 40 years at Tesco – the past 11 as the retailer’s UK distribution and fulfilment director.
Woolfenden, who said he made the decision to retire from Tesco last year, will see out his time at Tesco in the role of interim managing director for digital, having taken on the role alongside distribution six months ago.
He has previously held a raft of key roles at the supermarket giant, including retail director, operations director for Tesco’s Extra stores and distribution director for fresh and frozen foods.
Paying tribute to Woolfenden on Linkedin, colleagues said he had “transformed distribution and fulfilment” operations at Tesco and woud leave behind a “huge legacy”.
Woolfenden said: “After 40 years at Tesco and 11 years as the UK distribution and fulfilment director I made the decision last year to retire from Tesco. I will continue the role I’ve been doing alongside distribution for the last six months as MD for digital on an Interim basis full time until the end of the summer.
“I am delighted for Matthew Rhind on his promotion succeeding me, it’s richly deserved.”
In an announcement to staff, Tesco UK CEO Aswin Prasad said: ”After an incredible 40 years with Tesco, Andrew Woolfenden has decided to retire later this year. Andrew will remain with us until September, focusing fully on digital following the significant contribution he has made supporting this area over the past six months.
He leaves a strong legacy through the capability he has built across our distribution network and the many colleagues he has developed during his career.
Personally, I’ve really appreciated Andrew’s support and trusted leadership, experience and knowledge, leading such a crucial part of our operations to ensure we continuously serve our customers brilliantly.
As a result of Andrew’s departure, Matt Rhind has been promoted to UK distribution director. Matt brings more than 20 years of Tesco experience across transport, distribution, retail and international operations, most recently as network director.
This change comes into effect from tomorrow, Matt and Andrew will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition.”
