Spar is to extend its partnership with Woolworths, opening concessions in 50 "local" Woolworths high street stores this year. And it is in talks with Big W to install branded concessions at Woolworths' hypermarket stores.
It already has concessions in 19 of the 20 Woolworth's General Stores, which are performing in line with expectation, according to Spar retail director Steve Blackmore.
He said: "It is early days for local. We are planning to test 50 sites but we are still negotiating with Woolworths over details."
Woolworths must agree to extend opening hours and to install off-licences before the project can get under way, said Blackmore.
Spar opened its first concession within Woolworths General Stores on March 4 this year, two in the north west and one in Bournemouth. The main difference between Spar on the high street and Spar within Woolworths is that Spar concessions have more chilled space and Woolworths uses its own supplies for confectionery and news.
Senior marketing manager Joanne Morley said: "It took some time to decide how to bring the Woolworths and Spar brands together.
"We don't want to confuse the customer into thinking that Spar has been bought by Woolworths. Efforts are continuing to distinguish the two brands."
The next stage will be to put Spar branding on the front of Woolworth's General Stores according to Spar marketing director Susan Darbyshire.
She said: "Currently Spar signage is restricted to the aisles within Woolworths' General Stores.
"We want to put Spar on the front of stores. Our brand will give customers confidence."
