Zizzi Vegan Jackfruit Pizza

The impacted pizza is listed by Tesco and Morrisons

Zizzi has recalled one of its frozen vegan pizzas due to potential contamination with milk.

The product in question is Zizzi’s Vegan Jackfruit Pepperoni Rustica Pizza 400g with the batch code 5105 and a best before date of 15 July 2026. The impacted batch was only available in Tesco.

Zizzi has issued a point of sale notice in the supermarket, which advises shoppers with an allergy, intolerance or sensitivity to milk not to eat the affected product. Instead, they should return the pizza to store for a full refund, with or without the receipt.

“No other batch codes or other Zizzi products are affected,” said a Zizzi spokesman.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused by this error and are working closely with our manufacturing partner where the pizzas were made to ensure that this does not happen again,” he added.

The first retail iteration of Zizzi’s Vegan Jackfruit Pepperoni launched into Sainsbury’s via the supermarket’s Future Brands incubator scheme in 2020.

After disappearing from Sainsbury’s, the product returned exclusively to Tesco in 2022 and has since snagged a Morrisons listing, following Zizzi’s installation of a branded frozen fixture in the retailer last January.

The fixture did little to stem Zizzi’s declines, however, with value sales plummeting by 41.0% to £3.1m on volumes down 41.4% [52 w/e 7 September 2024].

Zizzi isn’t the only supplier to have recalled its vegan products over contamination fears in recent months.

For instance, The Happy Pear recalled several of its houmous products in Northern Ireland in November, over fears they may be contaminated with animal matter.
