Bargain Booze retailers are reaping the rewards of going green.

Energy reduction measures have been introduced in 100 franchise stores, resulting in savings of almost £500,000 a year.

Bargain Booze said the 100 stores had reduced their energy bills by an average of 41%, or £5,000 a year, by introducing initiatives such as efficient lighting, lower-energy refrigeration units and intelligent energy-management systems.

The off-licence chain is now urging other franchisees across its estate of around 670 stores to get involved.

“We are always looking to support our franchisees wherever we can, and reducing energy overheads is an obvious target,” said Mark Crabtree, commercial director at Bargain Booze. “The challenge is to identify specific solutions that will deliver the best savings for the total installed cost.

“We now have a range of energy-saving devices, from simple things like efficient lighting and heating to advanced systems that allow retailers to control energy usage with timers, sensors and remotely via the internet.”
