Morrisons’ online MD Simon Thompson is to leave the retailer at the end of the month, The Grocer can reveal.

Thompson joined Morrisons in September 2011 in preparation for the chain’s long-awaited launch online. He was previously internet store director at Apple, and has also worked for Lastminute.com and Honda.

Morrisons said Thompson, who is moving to a new role away from retail, was leaving the business “with strong levels of customer satisfaction and operational metrics that are on plan.”

Morrisons said last week its online business, launched in December 2013, recorded an on-time delivery rate of 97.5% in the pre-Christmas week, with product substitutions at just 1.4%.

It also delivered its millionth order last weekend. “I am very proud of the market-leading service we have built and would like to thank the team for their enormous effort in making it happen,” Thompson said.

Group customer, marketing and digital director Nick Collard will take board responsibility for Morrisons’ home delivery service, while day-to-day responsibility will be transferred to trading director for non-food and operations Matt Kelleher. Jamie Winter, trading director for Morrisons online delivery service, will transition out of that role in the coming weeks to become trading director for operations and services.
