Bestway is mourning the death of one of its “original pioneers”, retired director Adalat Khan Chaudhary.
Chaudhary passed away “peacefully and surrounded by his family” at the weekend in his ancestral home of Pakistan.
The childhood friend of Bestway co-founder and chairman Sir Anwar Pervez began his career in the late 1970s as general manager for the Acton warehouse, before moving to Abbey Road.
He then went on to run the central ordering department in 1994 and served as a director of Bestway Cash & Carry and a Trustee of Bestway Foundation in the UK and Pakistan.
Chaudhary made the decision in 2016 to retire and return to live in Pakistan in order to spend time with his family, which ended his long association with the business.
“As one of the original pioneers of the cash & carry and a well-respected member of the original team, Adalat will always be remembered for his gentlemanly style, along with his legendary negotiating skills,” said Bestway MD Dawood Pervez.
“He will be deeply missed by everyone in the Bestway family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Acton, which opened in 1976, was Bestway’s first cash & carry. It marked Sir Anwar Pervez’s first foray into wholesale, having previously established a chain of 10 convenience stores across London. At the time he was driven to do so by his frustration at being unable to unlock better value from local wholesalers despite his fast-growing retail sales.
