Berthold Albrecht, the son of Aldi co-founder Theo Albrecht, has died aged 58.

Albrecht was an executive board member and chairman of the foundation that owns Aldi Nord - which does not cover Aldi UK - and the US chain Trader Joe’s.

Albrecht died in November, but the news was only released by his family today.

Full page obituaries were posted in German newspapers which read “Berthold Albrecht was a very loving and extremely generous human being, an exemplary husband and father. Berthold was a fighter, full of hope until the end.”

He leaves behind wife Babette and five children - and a fortune estimated to be in the region of £6.5bn.

Aldi was divided into North and South in 1960, after a row between brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht over whether or not to sell cigarettes at tills.
