Name: Phil Goodwin

Was: Programme director for Morrisons

Now: Director at PwC

Years in grocery: 10

Career background: Goodwin has come full circle in a way - rejoining PwC this March, 10 years after leaving the consultancy firm he began his career at in 1995. On leaving, he made his first venture into the food and drink sector when he joined Brakes as group CIO. After two years, he moved to Littlewoods Shopdirect as head of business engagement, where he spent a further two years before moving to Bradford.

At Morrisons: Goodwin will be particularly interested in what is happening at Morrisons as two of the biggest projects that he was involved with are now coming to a head. His main achievement during his time there was the development of the three-year £310m Evolve IT infrastructure project, which is due to be completed at the end of this year and CEO Dalton Philips has called a radical evolution. “What we will have done when it is completed at the end of the year is leapfrog an entire generation of tech,”says Philips. Recent improvements as a result of Evolve include staff receiving tablets for ordering and the introduction of automated cash-counting. Goodwin became programme director for multi-channel in October 2011 and put in some of the building blocks that led to Morrisons’ tie-up with Ocado, which will result in the retailer’s online debut in January.

What is he doing now? Based at PwC’s Manchester office, Goodwin is responsible for technology across all sectors throughout the North West region. He said he was looking forward to working with the large “pool of fast-growing businesses with a forward-thinking approach to technology” in that part of the country. Goodwin also acts as technology advisor to the Call Centre Management Association.
