Wholesaler Snowdon & Bridge MD Donald Heyworth has died aged 89.

He died on 1 August following a short illness, survived by three children, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Heyworth left school aged 14 and took his first job in a Co-op store before joining Snowdon & Bridge as a cash & carry manager in Waterfoot, Lancashire, in 1965. He was soon after promoted to MD.

“He was well respected by his colleagues and his energy, drive, and clarity of thought drove the company forward,” his family said in a statement.

After recruiting a young graduate team, Heyworth diversified the business away from cash & carry and retail store deliveries into the catering supplies market, and pushed through a state-of-the-art computer system that facilitated the company’s rapid growth.

He led the £6m flotation of Snowdon & Bridge on the Unlisted Securities Market in 1985, and the £12m sale the following year to Fitch Lovell.

“He was much loved by his three children, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren,” the family said.
