Protein Bites crisps gain Holland&Barrett listing

The snacks contains just 9g of carbohydrates per bag

A new snack brand has secured a high-street listing for what it claims are the first high-protein, low-carb crisps in the UK.

Supplier Protein snacks has unveiled Protein Bites, made from soya protein isolate and rice flour. They contain 20g of protein per 35g bag - about 10 times that of a leading baked potato crisp - and 9g of carbohydrate, compared with baked crisps’ 25g.

They are available in sour cream & onion and Thai sweet chilli flavours (rsp: £1.75/35g).

The crisps roll out to Holland & Barrett from October following a “phenomenal” response to a soft launch in the sports nutrition market, and are set to be joined by bite-sized protein cookies in December.

The products are manufactured and distributed by cereal and meat-free protein supplier Brecks Foods, whose owner has a 50% stake in Protein Snacks.

The launches are tapping into growing interest in high-protein and low-carb products. Last month, Dr Zak’s launched a high-protein bread and announced it would be expanding into pasta and tortillas, while low-carb noodle brand Bare Naked Noodles recently secured backing on Dragons’ Den.
