French food and drink promotions body Sopexa is aiming to make rosé wine one of its priorities in 2005.
The decision comes as figures released by the body show that the number of consumers of rosé wines in the UK rocketed by 60% in the last two years, compared with 8% growth of total wines over the same period.
A spokesman for Sopexa said: “This evident demand for rosé represents a significant opportunity to the French wine sector, given the range and tradition of high quality rosé wine production in France.”
A spring wine tasting for the trade is planned, aimed at showcasing the “eclectic” range of rosé wines currently available on the UK market as well as less familiar offerings.
Meanwhile, research currently being undertaken into UK consumers’ attitudes towards French wines will be unveiled at an industry briefing at the London Wine Trade Fair in May.
