Researchers at Sainsbury have developed the first supermarket lettuce designed to be grown on a kitchen windowsill, according to a report in today’s Guardian.

The lettuce, crossed from endive, gem and curly-leafed strains, has taken two years to perfect but should last for several weeks in consumers’ homes.

Like potted herbs, the lettuce is designed to be grown at home and allows owners to remove leaves for eating as and when desired.
