Sainsbury’s says it has invested £150m in lowering prices for its customers

Sainsbury’s has lowered prices on 930 of its everyday products, including eggs, cheese and deodorant.

The retailer has invested £150m in its initiative to reduce what customers pay for their grocery shopping. It estimates over 12 million customers will be better off as a result.

The range of products reduced in price includes fresh and grocery items and Sainsbury’s own brand ranges and big name brands. These include six medium eggs, reduced by 10p to £1, 1kg of baby carrots reduced by 20p to £1.10, 400g of mature cheddar cheese going from £2.30 to £2, and Right Guard deodorant bringing a 50p saving from £2.50 to £2.

At Tesco, however, the same deodorant costs £1.50, while six medium eggs at Asda are 89p - 11p cheaper than Sainsbury’s new lower price tag.

Sainsbury’s has calculated that its new price cuts could save customers around 8%, or £4.95 off their weekly grocery shopping bills, from £62.88 to £57.93. It said its commitment to lower prices was consistent with its strategy to make its stores the retail destination of choice for customers.

“We know our customers choose to shop at Sainsbury’s for our fantastic quality and choice. These low prices now give customers more reasons to visit our stores,” said Sainsbury’s CEO, Mike Coupe. “They can do their entire shop with us, confident they are getting great low prices as well as Sainsbury’s quality and choice. We are committed to making shopping with us a great experience and today’s announcement is further demonstration of how we are investing to help our millions of customers live well for less.”
