Spanish fish processor Caladero plans to target UK retailers off the back of a new £91m packaging plant.

It currently draws most revenue from supplying Mercadona, Spain's largest supermarket chain.

However, it now plans to expand beyond domestic sales to export to the UK and the rest of Europe as its new 58,000 sq m modified atmosphere packaging plant in Zaragoza comes on stream. It was already close to closing deals with retailers in Portugal and Italy and had also been in discussions with chains in the UK, said founder and director general Carlos Amoros Lopez de la Nieta.

The company aims to achieve 30% of future sales from exports. Caladero is a major quota holder in the MSC-certified South African hake fishery, so has potential access to massive volumes of the fish with the eco-label.

Caladero aims to hit £744m in sales by 2011, up from £453m in 2009.
