A sparkling wine with Russian roots is being introduced in the UK to provide a real alternative to Champagne.

The Iron Wolf Company claims Sparkling 1917 is the first sparkling wine to be imported to the UK from the former Soviet Union.

It is targeted at young and fashionable drinkers put off by "the stuffiness associated with Champagne" and will be priced at £10.99.

"This Minsk product offers the taste and style we were looking for at a competitive price," said Mark Pursey director at Iron Wolf.

The company said it was in talks with retailers to list the wine.
