One of our 10 Things You Need To Know About… Spirits

More than half of Brits mix boozy drinks at home, with classic combo gin & tonic the favourite to whip up of an evening. Tonic proved to be a popular choice for mixer, as vodka & tonic followed closely in second place, according to exclusive research for The Grocer.

It’s evident from the sales. Gin is flying off the shelves with Brits splashing an extra £47m on the juniper-flavoured spirit [Kantar Worldpanel 52 w/e 19 June 2016], thanks, in part, to a flood of new craft offerings including Sipsmith’s Lemon Drizzle Gin

Premium mixer Fever-Tree is also benefiting, with value sales up 33.8% on volumes up 37.6% [Nielsen MAT 3 September 2016]. Schweppes, meanwhile, is struggling with sales down 5.7% despite owner CCEP launching its ‘biggest campaign in 20 years’.

Away from classic spirits & mixers, 16% of Brits shake (or stir) up 007’s favourite - a Martini - while 11% favour The Dude’s White Russian. Seven per cent even crack out a total of five spirits to create a Long Island Iced Tea, and 5% whip up a Manhattan.
