The opening of Checkout Superstore, a new three-floor retail emporium in Slough, has been delayed until early next year.
Ashiq Ali Abdeali, director, said: “Sadly we’ve met with a couple of delays, which I think is typical of a building project. As soon as we overcome those we’ll be looking to get some stock on the shelves and open to the public.”
The Grocer wrote exclusively in January that Abdeali and his family of retail and property entrepreneurs - who own a smaller store, Chalvey Supermarket, nearby - would open the 20,000 sq ft unit next to a Lidl.
Abdeali said suppliers had been “more than helpful” as soon as they heard how big the store would be. “They all want to be part of the action because it means they will share in the success. The support they are showing is exceptional, we are pulling out all the stops to get things done.
“It won’t be this year now, it will be early next, I think.”
The entire 12,000 sq ft ground floor will be dedicated to its food offer, while a mezzanine will house back offices, fridges, freezers, and fruit, veg and meat packing facilities.
The first floor will feature a coffee shop, children’s play zone, fireworks, partyware, cards, gifts and toys, and home & garden.
