Nestlé posted a 5.4% rise in organic sales for the first nine months of the year boosted by sales of ice cream and water during the hot summer in Europe.

However, the Swiss food giant said group sales fell 2.4% to CHF64.6bn due to negative exchange rates.

The European heatwave saw sales of confectionery such as Kit Kat fall 4.1%, while Häagen-Dazs ice cream and Perrier water rose 1%. Prepared dishes and cooking aids such as Maggi sauces and Buitoni pasta increased 2%.

Nestlé noted that cost cutting programmes and improved operating margins should see organic growth of 5% to 6% for the year.
