Volumes of British-grown Tenderstem broccoli are tipped to be up 20% on last year, according to forecasts from UK Tenderstem licensor Coregeo.
The total British Tenderstem crop for 2011 only the second year it has been widely available is expected to come to 480,000kg, an 80,000kg increase on last year's total.
Growers had learnt a lot last year about planting dates and how best to manipulate the crop, said Herefordshire grower Andrew Green (pictured), adding that they hoped to be able to produce more Tenderstem for much longer this year.
British Tenderstem has been sold in the UK for the past five years, but it has only been widely available for the past two. Last year, it represented 20% of the overall volume of Tenderstem sold in the UK.
British Tenderstem hit supermarkets early this year, on 26 May, as a result of warm spring weather.
