Not all supermarket workers are recently released psychotics on parole, of course. Just some of them.

But it emerged last week that Tesco has hired a real-life former shoplifter (boo! hiss!) to star in staff training videos designed to help eagle-eyed employees spot suspect behaviour and reduce in-store theft.

Crime prevention can go too far, however. This week Chinese media reported that staff at a local Wal-Mart had beaten to death a suspected shoplifter. The retailer said it was investigating an "incident".
