Tesco has revealed plans for a massive roll-out of RFID tagging technology in its supply chain next year.

IT and logistics director Phil Clarke said that Tesco would start tagging cases travelling between its distribution centres and stores on selected products from April 2004.

Tesco would then start introducing its suppliers to the technology with cases tagged from source from September 2004 onwards.

By 2006 all suppliers will need to radio-barcode cases and pallets destined for Tesco distribution centres, said Clarke.

The roll-out is part of what is known as “the secure supply chain initiative” which started in Tesco’s Milton Keynes non-food depot this September.
